Learn more about CDIDrilled Shafts
Our teams are experienced with selecting a foundation system for your project’s success. Drilled shafts are typically high-capacity cast-in-place deep foundation elements. They are chosen in urban settings where vibration cannot be tolerated or where shallow foundations cannot develop sufficient capacity. Their use as structural support has increased due to heightened lateral strength and seismic requirements for bridge foundations. Relatively new developments in design and construction methods of shafts have provided considerably more economy to their use in all settings. Additional applications include providing foundations for buildings, industrial installations, jetties and docks, high mast lighting, cantilevered signs, cellular phone and communication towers.
Drill Systems
New developments in design and construction methods of shafts have provided considerably more economy to use drill systems in all settings. In many instances, a single drilled shaft can replace a cluster of piles eliminating the need (and cost) for a pile cap. With a wide range of drill systems, our team can install any deep foundation element on your project. Learn more about our robust drill systems:
Shoring Walls, Cofferdams & Cut-Off Walls
Our experienced teams build shoring and cofferdams to retain earth or water, protect adjacent structures (buildings, bridge abutments, roadways), and cut off ground water or contaminated soil when excavation is required. Shoring systems also assist cutting off ground water during excavation. We use the two main components to shoring walls: the retention system that contains the earth; and, the support systems. Our sophisticated shoring systems are designed to factor in unknown geotechnical factors, building, traffic, and equipment surcharge loads.
Temporary Access and Work Bridges
We own many types of temporary work platforms and over 300’ of temporary work bridge, with access to an additional 300’. This allows us to install a work bridge to access and supply any of your construction needs, no matter how challenging the project. Our work bridge is capable of supporting a 250-ton crane, service trucks, highway trucks, construction equipment and any of our drilling equipment. We can custom build configurations to suit all of your access needs.
Our teams have successfully installed our work platforms and bridges in remote locations, some accessible only by rail or barge. We are able to drill in the foundations for our work platforms into any geological formation.
Concrete Rebar Placement Grouting
NorLand has the experience to place reinforcing steel and concrete for piling and drilled shafts on your project. We can provide custom-engineered lift and placement plans that are specific to project needs. We have successfully tremie-poured thousands of drilled shafts and piles in all conditions including artesian. We can also provide various grouting services such as consolidation and annular grouting. In certain geological formations, pre-stabilization grouting is required to bind a formation together.
Marine Work
Our extensive background in marine construction and in supplying marine contractors with drilling equipment provides our clients with a team who can work in any environment. We have successfully installed drilled piles and rock-socketed drilled piles along the Pacific Coast from San Francisco to Alaska, and also on the Atlantic Coast. We also install drilled shafts in fresh water, and have done so over rivers, in hydroelectric dams and on lakes. Our works include: land-based, work platform, work trestles, hanging lead, or oscillator.
Pile Driving
We have the equipment and expertise to drive an assortment of end-bearing piles, including: Steel H pile, Steel pipe pile, Concrete piling, and Timber piling.
Anchor & Micropile Drillling
Our fleet of modern casing rigs can handle any ground conditions to install tiebacks, anchors, pipe piles, and micropiles. The rig pictured here is our largest machine at 27 tons. It is a very powerful machine capable of drilling at almost any angle while achieving very high production.
