Malahat Foreshore Reclamation

Revitalizing the Malahat Foreshore with Copcan Civil

Copcan Civil recently completed a vital foreshore protection project for the Malahat Nation, safeguarding land from erosion and preserving cultural heritage. This project involved the careful excavation and installation of riprap along 120 meters of shoreline, ensuring stability while respecting the area’s archaeological significance. With a tight schedule driven by tidal and Fish Window deadlines, Copcan’s skilled crews and GPS-guided excavation methods made it possible to complete the work ahead of schedule. Collaboration with the Malahat Nation and environmental stewardship were central to this success, reflecting Copcan’s commitment to building enduring communities.

Working closely with the Nation’s archaeological consultants, Copcan sifted excavated material to preserve artifacts and cultural heritage. The site’s proximity to the water posed unique challenges, including the need for precise timing around tides and regulatory windows. The team leveraged their experience, with GPS-equipped excavators and collaborative planning, to overcome these hurdles. Copcan also provided additional rock from their own quarry, ensuring continuity when the Nation’s supply ran low.

The project’s impact goes beyond erosion control; it preserves the cultural integrity of the Malahat Nation’s land and provides a foundation for future shoreline protection efforts. The successful completion of this project ahead of schedule not only helped maintain the area’s natural beauty but also reinforced the partnership between Copcan Civil and the Malahat Nation.
