Transformer and Switch Gear Installation
Scope of Work:
- Machinery Moving: Transported the 13,200-pound transformer core and coil from on-site storage to the installation site.
- Crane Coordination: Hoisted the transformer with a Hiab at a 40’ radius and Kasen Crane at a 95’ radius through multiple floor slab openings with less than 6” clearance.
- Skating and Placement: Skated the transformer and switchgear sections approximately 200’ into the electrical room, navigating multiple slopes and overhead obstructions with less than 2” clearance.
- Assembly: Collaborated with site electricians to assemble the components and place the transformer onto vibration isolators.
Challenges & Solutions:
- Site Logistics: Managed a spread-out site over three city blocks, coordinating multiple stakeholders.
- Restricted Access: Navigated narrow roads and multiple slopes within the parkade.
- Clearance Issues: Ensured precise movement with minimal clearance, highlighting Pro-Tech’s expertise in tight space operations.
Overall Impact:
This project underscores Pro-Tech Industrial Movers’ proficiency in machinery moving, logistical planning, and project consulting. The successful installation of the transformer, despite significant challenges, demonstrates Pro-Tech’s commitment to precision, safety, and efficient project management.
Rail Transload, Transportation and Offloading Services Case Study for…
Scope of Work: The transformers, each weighing 107 metric tonnes, were delivered by rail to Revelstoke, BC. Apex used a jack and roll system to transfer the units from rail cars onto a dual-lane trailer. Two Western Star tractors—one pulling and one pushing—transported the transformers to the Mica Dam site. The route required a professional engineering evaluation of all bridges and road culverts to ensure the safe transport of the oversized and overweight loads. En route, three pilot cars guided the convoy, maintaining radio communication to ensure safety and adherence to MOT regulations. Upon arrival, the transformers were offloaded using the dam’s 300-ton gantry crane and positioned at the final site.
Challenges & Solutions: The project presented several challenges, including the sheer weight of the transformers, the need for specialty trailers, the remote and rugged location, and navigating public highways with oversized loads. Additionally, the project had a strict timeline due to weather conditions. Apex overcame these challenges by deploying the correct trailer equipment, assembling a skilled crew of movers, and working with a professional engineering firm to design an efficient and safe delivery route. The crew navigated the complex logistics, ensuring timely delivery without compromising safety or quality.
Overall Impact: This two-month project was completed on schedule, with all transformers delivered safely and without incident. The successful transportation of these transformers played a vital role in the Mica Dam upgrade, helping to significantly increase power generation capacity and provide reliable energy to tens of thousands of homes during peak periods. Apex’s expertise and precise execution contributed to the overall success of this critical infrastructure project.
